Red Ceramic Vessel with Holes and Hollow Stem, Removable Lid

My title describes the thing. It does not feel aged at all, so it may still be in production. The letters ‘TS’ are embossed on the side.

This was at my local thrift store. Whatever it is, they’ve put a high price on it. I’ve searched for ‘enclosed incense holder’ and the like with no success. Image searches have also been unsuccessful.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ANSWERS:

  1. It’s called a turkey stone, you fill it with herbs, beer and stuff it the bird.
  2. That’s ironic. Turkeys swallow lots of little stones to help them digest their food in the stomach; we then stuff one giant stone in them before we digest them.
  3. As others have said, it’s a turkey stone which ‘helps’ infuse flavour cooking a turkey. Honestly though, the best cooked turkey will be a spatchcocked turkey, and I question bringing in anything to the interior cavity of a bird, there’s enough evidence that ‘steaming’ the interior is complete BS and the flavour it will give is minimal.

So if you do end up being gifted one, unless you want to give your bird a dong while cooking, you can load this up as a tropical punch bowl with straws, and top up using the spout as the night goes on without interfering with your perfectly cooked spatchcocked turkey!

  4. Sounds like the same idea as a vertical chicken roaster. Except less vertical.
  5. Looks like it could double as a humidifier if you put hot water in it
  6. Maybe a thing to sit on top a fireplace to steam water?
  7. It’s missing the spout stopper
  8. It’s to speed up roasting a turkey
  9. 12 hole ocarina ?
  10. Naw, part it out. Sous vide breasts, brown off bones and wings to make gravy (and then serve the wings), roast off legs and thighs separately, or remove meat and grind for meatballs or kofta, use skin to make skin chips.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? LET US KNOW IN THE COMMENT!

It sounds like you’re describing a specific item, perhaps a piece of pottery or a decorative object. A red ceramic vessel with holes and a hollow stem, along with a removable lid, could have various uses or symbolic meanings depending on the cultural or artistic context.

Here are a few possibilities based on your description:

  1. Incense Burner: The vessel could be an incense burner used for burning incense sticks or cones. The holes would allow the smoke to escape, while the hollow stem might serve as a chimney to direct the smoke upwards. The removable lid could be used to access the interior where the incense is placed.
  2. Oil Diffuser: It could also be an oil diffuser used for dispersing aromatic oils into the air. The holes would allow the scent to waft out, while the hollow stem might serve as a handle or as part of the mechanism for dispersing the oil. The removable lid would allow for easy refilling of the vessel with oil.
  3. Decorative Vessel: Alternatively, it could simply be a decorative vessel created for aesthetic purposes. The holes and hollow stem could be purely decorative elements, adding visual interest to the piece. The removable lid might be designed for practicality or could be purely ornamental.
