It’s been there for at least five years since I moved in and I finally decided to remove it and try to find out what it is. There are no markings on it and just a little circle/hole on the front side.
Some of the answers:
- Outdoor thermometer for in-house weather station, The switch is to change channels in case of interference
- Could be an LED night light with a photocell/sensor in the middle. Three brightness settings? Translucent face it is yellowed from the sun.
- Sensor from a wireless alarm system.
- Beacon from a wireless pet fence system
- I feel like the weather station ones usually have more openings and different sensors on them.
- Outside tempo transmitter. Probably for an Accurite time/date/temp display. I had one and it quit…
- Looks like the noisy part of a wireless doorbell.
- It could be a cat/pest noise making deterrent.
- I vote pest repellant over thermometer. No thermometer needs to be that large.
People usually set these up outside to keep pests away from their yard. The switch probably changes the frequency/intensity of the sound or signal, whether it’s ultrasonic sounds or flashing lights, to make the area less appealing to pests.
The overall size makes more sense for a repellant device needing to house a speaker or bulbs/LEDs, and 2 AA batteries is also overkill for a thermometer which requires far less current as it only needs to emit a signal, not a output a sound or light.
